Trump sets 100% tariff on generic drug imports from August 2028

What's next: The duty would rise to 200% in August 2029, a move that could hit India's drug exports to the US.

President Donald Trump set a 100% tariff on imported generic drugs, giving manufacturers two years to shift production to the United States before the duty starts in August 2028. In a social media post Tuesday, Trump said the levy is meant to push companies to build plants and equipment in the US; it would then increase to 200% in August 2029. The administration has been pressing drugmakers to expand US manufacturing and opened a national security investigation into the pharmaceutical industry in April 2025 under Section 232. Generic producers such as Sandoz, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Viatris rely on global supply chains and thinner margins than branded-drug makers. The source article said pharmaceuticals shipped from India to America totaled $10.5 billion in 2024 to 2025.
