Trump renews Greenland push at NATO, threatens troop pull from Europe

What’s new: Denmark and Greenland pushed back in Ankara as talks among the three sides continue through a working group.

President Donald Trump revived his demand that the United States control Greenland during the NATO summit in Ankara, saying the Danish territory should be under U.S. control and warning Washington could withdraw troops from Europe. Trump argued Greenland is strategically important in the Arctic and cited what he described as Chinese and Russian ship activity around the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the idea, saying allies should respect the sovereignty of the Danish kingdom and that Greenland is not for sale. Greenland Foreign Minister Mute Egede said the island’s future must be decided by its people. A working group with representatives from the United States, Denmark and Greenland has been meeting after a framework for talks was set earlier this year.
