Trump picks Will Scharf to replace White House counsel in September

What's new: The move is one of the biggest West Wing personnel changes of Trump's second term, which has otherwise been relatively stable.

President Donald Trump tapped staff secretary Will Scharf to become White House counsel, replacing David Warrington in September in one of the most significant staffing shifts of his second term. Scharf, a conservative lawyer who also worked on Trump’s personal legal team, previously served as a federal prosecutor and helped argue the 2024 Supreme Court immunity case tied to Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. He recently joined Stephen Miller in presenting executive orders aimed at narrowing automatic citizenship for people born in the United States. Trump praised Warrington, who had been general counsel for his 2024 campaign, but did not identify who will take over Scharf’s current role.
