Trump Opens Possibility of New U.S. Strike on Iran This Week
The Pentagon has deployed an additional carrier strike group, bringing U.S. warships in the Middle East to more than 24.
U.S. President Donald Trump opened the possibility of another strike on Iran in the near term, even saying the option could be carried out on Sunday. Trump said Washington was still weighing two paths, either further military action or a deal with Teheran, with the goal of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. At the same time, The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. was preparing a range of options, from bombing nuclear facilities and infrastructure such as bridges to operations against Iran's islands. The report also said an additional carrier strike group and a Marine expeditionary unit were moving to the Middle East. If they arrive, the number of U.S. warships in the region would exceed 24. Despite the broader military buildup, the report said no final decision had been made to launch a strike.
