Trump ties Iran sanctions relief to peace deal after strikes

What's new: Trump said he would consider unfreezing Iranian assets only after an agreement, as ceasefire talks remain fragile.

President Donald Trump said he would not unfreeze Iran’s assets or lift sanctions before a peace deal is completed, linking any relief to Tehran’s behavior after an agreement. In an interview recorded June 5 with NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump said the steps would come only afterward. He also said he was not requiring Lebanon to be part of a short-term arrangement with Iran. The remarks come as the Trump administration pushes for a deal weeks after US and Israeli forces began strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. Trump said he would be willing to speak with Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio has maintained that a temporary ceasefire is still holding despite recent US strikes described as defensive actions.
