Trump halts Jay Clayton DNI hearing in fight over FISA and SDNY post

What's next: Bill Pulte stays as acting intelligence chief while the White House presses for Jamie McDonald's confirmation.

President Donald Trump moved to stop a Senate hearing on Jay Clayton's nomination to be director of national intelligence, tying the delay to confirmation of Jamie McDonald as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. In a Truth Social post early Wednesday, Trump said the hearing would not go forward and that Bill Pulte would remain acting DNI for now. Trump linked the move to a standoff over renewing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which lets U.S. agencies collect communications of foreign targets abroad. He also said he would not back renewing the authority unless Congress advances the SAVE AMERICA ACT.
