Trump pushes Gianni Infantino for next UN chief

Any nominee must clear the Security Council, where a U.S. veto could still block confirmation by the General Assembly.

President of the United States Donald Trump is said to want FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next Secretary-General of the UN. The New York Post, cited by Fox News and reported by CNN Indonesia and Antara, wrote that a source close to Trump считает Infantino is widely respected and capable of bringing many sides together. The current Secretary-General, António Guterres, ends his term on 31 December 2026, and the successor would take office on 1 January 2027. There is no confirmation yet whether Trump has discussed the idea directly with Infantino or whether the FIFA chief would be willing to run. If he does seek the post, Infantino would need the backing of all 15 members of the UN Security Council before confirmation by the General Assembly. Trump and Infantino drew added attention after appearing together at the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
