Trump casts doubt on blame for Iran school strike that killed 175

What's new: A prior Reuters report found a US military inquiry initially pointed to US forces, while the Pentagon’s broader probe continues.

President Donald Trump said June 24 that investigators may never determine who was responsible for the Feb. 28 strike on a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, that killed more than 175 children and teachers, according to Iranian officials. The attack took place on the first day of the war as the United States and Israel struck Iran. Reuters reported in March that an initial internal US military investigation found US forces were likely responsible, possibly because of outdated targeting data. The Pentagon later widened the inquiry but has not publicly confirmed any preliminary findings. The UN Human Rights Office called the strike “absolutely horrific,” and a deliberate attack on a school could amount to a war crime under international humanitarian law.
