Tottenham land Van Hecke from Brighton in £52 million deal

What's new: The 26-year-old center back reunites with Roberto De Zerbi as Spurs rebuild a defense that allowed 122 league goals in two seasons.

Tottenham completed the signing of Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million, adding a third arrival in a summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi. The 26-year-old center back signed a long-term contract after Brighton accepted Spurs' third bid. Van Hecke played under De Zerbi at Brighton and made 131 appearances for the club after joining from NAC Breda in 2020. He started 36 of Brighton's 38 Premier League matches last season as the Seagulls finished eighth and qualified for Europe. Tottenham have focused early on defense after conceding 122 league goals across the past two campaigns, with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi also brought in.
