Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel dies after match collision

Why it matters: Spanish police opened a routine judicial inquiry, and European matches held a minute of silence after his death.

Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died Tuesday after suffering head and chest injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match a day earlier. The 30-year-old was hurt in stoppage time with the score tied 2-2, after Owono came out to clear a long ball near the center circle. De Miguel was treated on the field, taken by ambulance to hospital and later died after his condition worsened. The referee sent off Owono and abandoned the match. Spanish police opened a judicial inquiry for possible involuntary manslaughter, a routine step when a death is considered non-natural under Spanish law. A minute of silence was observed before Champions League games Tuesday.
