Ten Hag blames Ronaldo for failed Manchester United reunion

What's new: The former United manager said Ronaldo's fitness and refusal to buy into the team plan drove their 2022 split.

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag pinned Cristiano Ronaldo's troubled second spell at Old Trafford on poor fitness and a breakdown in commitment, saying the forward "let the team down" during the 2022-23 season. In an interview with The Athletic cited by British media, Ten Hag said he met Ronaldo in Portugal before taking charge in 2022 and built plans around him, but later concluded the striker was not physically prepared and would not do enough on or off the ball. Ronaldo left United in November 2022 after refusing to come on against Tottenham and then giving a television interview criticizing the club and Ten Hag. He later joined Al-Nassr.
