Indonesia's NDC target at risk without energy transition, waste sorting
The government is targeting a 466 million ton CO2 cut, including 82.47 million tons from EBT and 40 million tons from waste.
The government said Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target risks missing the mark if the energy transition and waste sorting are not accelerated over the next five years. Eniya Listiani Dewi, director general of EBTKE at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the energy sector is now key to cutting emissions, with a target to reduce 82.47 million tons of CO2 by 2030 from renewable energy and about 30 million tons of CO2 from energy efficiency. At the same time, Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono said the waste sector has a target to cut 40 million tons of emissions, but RDF, waste-to-energy and composting programs will stall without sorting at the source. Indonesia is targeting a reduction of 466 million tons of CO2 in its latest NDC, while peak emissions are said to come in 2035.
