Sydney shark attack survivor woke after 10 days in induced coma

What's new: Leah Stewart spoke briefly with family after multiple surgeries, but remains in intensive care with more operations ahead.

Leah Stewart, a 34-year-old teacher and mother, briefly woke from an induced coma more than a week after a shark attack at Sydney's Coogee Beach, her family said. Stewart was bitten on June 13 while swimming near shore and suffered multiple wounds to her arms and legs as well as severe blood loss. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition and has undergone five surgeries, including the amputation of one arm. Her brother, Joshua Stewart, said doctors reduced her sedation on Tuesday, allowing her to tell her mother and partner, Fernando, "I love you" and ask about her daughter, August. Stewart remains in intensive care, and her family said more surgeries are planned in the coming weeks.
