Supreme Court rejects Trump bid to undo $5 million Carroll verdict
What’s next: The court still has not ruled on Trump’s separate appeal of an $83.3 million defamation award to E. Jean Carroll.
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to reopen Donald Trump’s challenge to a federal jury verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. The order left in place the 2023 judgment awarding Carroll $5 million in damages. The justices gave no explanation for denying Trump’s petition for rehearing after they had already turned away his earlier appeal in late June. Carroll was paid more than $5.6 million last month, including post-judgment interest, according to the case docket. Trump’s lawyers had argued the court should revisit the case because a separate Carroll dispute over an $83.3 million defamation verdict raises questions about presidential immunity for official statements.
