Supreme Court justices seek $228 million budget, more security

Why it matters: The court wants nearly $15 million for added protection after 564 threats to federal judges in the last fiscal year.

Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett appeared before a House appropriations panel Tuesday in a rare Capitol Hill hearing centered on the court’s budget and rising security risks. The court is seeking $228 million for the next fiscal year, about 10% more than the year before. Nearly $15 million of that request would expand personal protection for the justices, including six more agents for each, while another $2 million would support an off-site residential security post and more Supreme Court police officers. The hearing came weeks after the court ended a major term and amid heightened concern over threats to judges, including a swatting call at Barrett’s home in May.
