Sugiono and Ahmad Muzani set to travel to Iran for Khamenei burial
Indonesia had initially planned to send only its ambassador, but Iran restricted funeral access to officials above ambassador level.
Foreign Minister Sugiono and MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani are scheduled to attend the funeral procession for former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday, July 9, at Imam Reza Shrine, Mashhad. Sugiono said the Indonesian government is still awaiting confirmation from Iran on the exact time and venue for the delegation's attendance. Earlier, Indonesia had prepared only the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, as its representative because several key officials were busy preparing a state visit in Jakarta. But later, according to Sugiono, Iran informed Indonesia that access to the funeral event would be open only to officials above ambassador level. Tribute ceremonies for Khamenei have begun in Tehran and will continue in other cities, while Rolliansyah has attended a joint prayer at the Grand Mosalla Tehran.
