Stanford team used AI to build 16 working new viruses in lab

Researchers at Stanford University used artificial intelligence to design whole viral genomes that worked in the lab, creating 16 new bacteriophages able to infect and kill E. coli bacteria. The work marks the first reported use of generative AI to design complete, functional viruses from scratch. The team tested 302 AI-generated candidates and found 16 that successfully replicated. Assistant professor Brian Hie told the BBC the achievement opened “new territory” for AI-driven biology. Because the viruses target bacteria rather than people, they pose no direct threat to humans, but the advance could help develop phage therapy for antibiotic-resistant infections while intensifying concerns about safety and misuse.
