Sprout recall tied to 55 E. coli, salmonella cases in 15 states
What's new: Federal officials linked the illnesses to Everything Sprouts products sold since May 27, and at least four people were hospitalized.
Everything Sprouts is recalling alfalfa sprouts after federal and state health officials tied the products to 55 illnesses across 15 states involving E. coli and salmonella. The FDA and CDC said 46 people were infected with E. coli, seven with salmonella and two with both. Illnesses began between May 31 and Aug. 8, and at least four people were hospitalized. Minnesota health officials said the sprouts were sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to restaurants and grocery stores and urged consumers not to eat them. The FDA inspected the Minneapolis company on Aug. 19 and recommended a recall. The agency had previously cited the facility for sanitation problems, including roof leaks and buildup on irrigation equipment.
