South Korea landslide kills 1 after record rain batters Geoje

What's new: Geoje logged 124.5 mm of rain in an hour, a city record, as evacuations and rescues continued.

A landslide slammed into an apartment building in Geoje, South Korea, on Monday after torrential rain hit the country’s south, killing one person and injuring others. The slide buried the first floor of the building in South Gyeongsang province, and rescue crews pulled out three residents. One later died at a hospital. Authorities were evacuating about 100 residents because of the risk of more landslides and were rescuing 20 people stranded in the area. Geoje, near Busan, saw rivers overflow and roads flood, disrupting traffic. The weather agency issued heavy-rain warnings for southern areas, where some places have recorded up to 800 mm of rain since Saturday.
