South Carolina Senate debate tests Graham in tightening race

Why it matters: Cook shifted the seat from Solid Republican to Likely Republican after the contest showed new signs of competitiveness.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Darline Graham was set to debate Democratic challenger Annie Andrews and Libertarian candidate Kasie Whitener on Sunday night, putting fresh attention on a race that has tightened in recent weeks. Graham became the GOP nominee in a special primary after the July death of her brother, longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham. Gov. Henry McMaster then appointed her to serve the rest of his term through January, after President Donald Trump urged her to run for a full term. South Carolina remains a strongly Republican state, but the Cook Political Report recently shifted its rating of the contest from Solid Republican to Likely Republican.
