Software error put 6,600 noncitizens on New Jersey voter rolls

A software error at New Jersey's motor vehicle system mistakenly added about 6,600 noncitizens to the state's voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024, Gov. Mikie Sherrill said. A preliminary state review found fewer than 400 of those people later voted in elections, and Sherrill said they had been registered through no fault of their own after indicating they were not U.S. citizens. She ordered their removal from the rolls and said New Jersey will replace the vendor tied to the mistake. The disclosure comes as President Donald Trump's administration presses states to tighten election checks before the November congressional elections.
