SK Hynix breaks ground on $4 billion Indiana AI memory hub

What's next: The West Lafayette site is set to open its cleanroom in 2028 and start HBM4E volume production in 2029.

SK Hynix formally kicked off construction of its first U.S. facility, a $4 billion advanced memory packaging and AI research site in West Lafayette, Indiana, as demand for chips used in artificial intelligence keeps rising. The South Korean company said the plant will package and test next-generation high-bandwidth memory, with wafers made in South Korea and shipped to Indiana for final processing before delivery to U.S. customers. Chief executive Kwak Noh-Jung said the cleanroom should begin operating in the second half of 2028, with HBM4E volume production targeted for the third quarter of 2029. He also said the current shortage in AI memory is likely to last through 2030, underscoring the push to add U.S.-based supply.
