Singapore warns August haze risk as Sumatra, Kalimantan fires grow

What's new: Forecasters expect below-average rainfall, highs up to 35C and daily haze advisories if the 24-hour PSI tops 100.

Singapore could face hazy conditions in the second half of August if fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan intensify, as dry weather persists across the region. The Meteorological Service Singapore said hotspots and smoke plumes have been observed mainly in southern and central Sumatra and in parts of Kalimantan, with south-easterly or south-westerly winds capable of carrying smoke toward the city-state. It forecast below-average rainfall across most of Singapore, with short thundery showers on some late mornings and afternoons, but several fair and windy days as well. Daily highs are expected to reach 33C to 34C on most days and 35C on a few, while nighttime temperatures may stay above 27C.
