Singapore to study western island reclamation after reef concerns

Singapore’s government will carry out technical studies before moving ahead with long-term plans to reclaim and merge western islands for industry, energy and defense uses, after scientists and marine groups warned of major biodiversity losses. The Ministry of National Development said the work will include feasibility studies, site investigations, surveys, and engineering and environmental assessments, with stakeholder engagement before studies and work begin. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong flagged the project at the 2026 National Day Rally, citing islands including Semakau, Bukom and Sudong. Researchers say nearby habitats include some of Singapore’s remaining natural coral reefs, with parts of the reef system around Pulau Hantu and Pulau Semakau dating back about 8,000 years.
