Singapore targets 20 firms in widening crackdown over haze fires

What’s new: NEA sought records from 10 Singapore-registered companies and ordered 10 Indonesian concession holders to fight fires and halt burning.

Singapore widened its legal push over the regional haze, with the National Environment Agency issuing notices to 20 companies tied to fires in Indonesia. Ten Singapore-registered firms, including Wilmar International and Asia Pulp & Paper, were ordered to provide information on land concessions, corporate links and fire-prevention steps under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act. Separately, 10 Indonesian companies were told to deploy firefighting crews, stop any burning and submit plans to prevent repeat fires. The action follows days of unhealthy air in Singapore and comes as ministers push for tougher legal, regulatory and economic pressure on companies linked to burning in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
