Singapore starts 3 nuclear talent programs ahead of 2027 review

What's next: A UN atomic agency review in 2027 will test whether Singapore can make an informed call on deploying nuclear power.

Singapore launched three programs to build local nuclear expertise as it studies whether advanced nuclear energy could help power the city-state. The Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and the Energy Market Authority said the effort is meant to strengthen capabilities in areas including technology assessment, project development, licensing and regulation before a 2027 review by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Singapore has not decided whether to adopt nuclear power. Energy and Industry Minister Tan See Leng said the government is building a pipeline of experts while keeping safety, security and safeguards central. The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University are also working toward a joint master's program in nuclear engineering next year.
