Singapore's Wong set Aug. 23 rally focus on families, global shifts

What's new: The speech is expected to address a government review of family support as Singapore's fertility rate sits at a record-low 0.87.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to use Singapore's National Day Rally on Sunday to focus on support for families and how the country should respond to fast-changing global conditions. Wong said he would outline how Singapore can adapt to change, stay open and connected, and use technology on its own terms. He is also expected to discuss a broader government push to ease pressure on households. In his Aug. 8 National Day Message, Wong said officials were conducting a major review of family support, including child-raising costs and access to affordable infant care and childcare. Singapore's resident total fertility rate fell to 0.87 in 2025. The rally is scheduled at ITE College Central in Ang Mo Kio, with Wong speaking first in Malay, then Mandarin, and in English from 8 p.m.
