Singapore's Lim Tean faces 3 charges over alleged flight to Malaysia

What's next: Prosecutors won an order to deny bail after his current sentence, and his case returns to court on Oct. 23.

Singapore lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean was handed three new criminal charges Friday over his alleged failure to report to jail and his departure to Malaysia while on court bail. Prosecutors accused Lim, 61, of knowingly failing to surrender at the State Courts on Aug. 3, leaving Singapore through Tuas Checkpoint on Aug. 4 without presenting a valid passport, and unlawfully departing to avoid serving his sentence. Lim appeared by video link and did not enter a plea. The court granted the prosecution's request that he not be released on bail after finishing his current term, citing other ongoing investigations. Lim was arrested in Johor Bahru on Aug. 6 and returned to Singapore on Aug. 11.
