Singapore probes man accused of using shell firms to dodge rent
What's new: regulators are also examining possible wrongful trading and Companies Act breaches tied to the rental cases.
Singapore police are investigating a man for alleged cheating after a court found he used shell companies in a pattern to occupy landed homes without paying rent. In Parliament on Wednesday, Senior Minister of State for Law Murali Pillai said the Official Receiver is separately examining possible fraudulent and wrongful trading, while the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority is reviewing potential Companies Act breaches. The case centers on American Anthony Thomas Price, whom a judge said used companies including Noranth Ventures and Bundleluxe in disputes involving properties in Kembangan and Siglap between 2019 and 2026. The government said companies may legitimately lease homes, but courts can hold individuals personally liable when corporate structures are abused for fraud.
