Singapore prepares new island from Semakau, Bukom, Sudong
The area south of Jurong Island is planned for advanced manufacturing, power infrastructure and military needs.
Singapore is planning a major reclamation to merge Pulau Semakau, Pulau Bukom, Pulau Sudong and several other small islands into one new island in the west. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong outlined the plan in the National Day Rally on 23 August as a long-term project that is still under review. The new area is designed to support the next generation of industry, not only petrochemicals like Jurong Island, but also advanced manufacturing, power generation and space for the Singapore Armed Forces. Semakau is now the site of Singapore's offshore landfill, Bukom hosts its first oil refinery still in operation, while Sudong has an emergency airstrip. The government will also build a second road link to Jurong Island and new connections to the western island.
