Singapore man got 14 days’ detention over PayPal laptop fraud

What's new: He recruited four friends into the scheme, then filed a police report and paid restitution for them as well.

A Singapore court gave Jonathan Wee Jianwei, 29, a 14-day short detention order after he joined a scheme that exploited a PayPal glitch to obtain Lenovo laptops without valid payment. He also must complete 70 hours of community service within a year. Wee pleaded guilty to conspiring to deceive Lenovo, with two other charges considered. In March 2020, co-accused Calvin Fong Jun Jie remotely used Wee’s laptop to buy three Lenovo devices worth S$6,701.40 through Wee’s PayPal account, and the laptops were delivered to Wee’s mother’s office. Wee received S$670 and later recruited four friends for S$100 per recruit before guilt led him to report the case to police and make restitution.
