Singapore fines French teen S$600 over viral iJooz straw stunt
What's new: Immigration authorities are reviewing the 19-year-old student's pass after the public nuisance conviction.
A Singapore court fined French student Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 19, S$600 on Wednesday after he admitted creating a public nuisance by licking a straw from an iJooz vending machine and putting it back in the dispenser. The incident happened on March 12 at Goldhill Centre after a boxing class, and the video later spread online. Court records showed iJooz replaced all 500 straws in the dispenser after the stunt. Prosecutors and defense lawyers both backed a fine rather than probation or detention, citing practical issues because Maximilien is due to study in France from September to December. Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority said it is reviewing his student pass.
