Singapore court gives maid life term for killing 73-year-old man

What's new: The Indonesian caregiver admitted suffocating the wheelchair-bound victim with a pillow after he pressed her over stolen cash and jewelry.

A Singapore court sentenced Sumiyati, a 53-year-old Indonesian domestic worker, to life imprisonment after convicting her of murdering 73-year-old Low Hoon Cheong in a Bishan flat in April 2022. Prosecutors said Sumiyati had been employed to care for Low, who had mobility issues, and had earlier stolen jewelry from his wife and cash from the home. After the family confronted her over the thefts but chose not to report her, Low questioned her again about missing jewelry on April 28, 2022. She grew angry and feared he would discover she had taken money that day, then suffocated him with a pillow. Justice Mavis Chionh ruled that the case did not warrant the death penalty and imposed life imprisonment.
