Singapore court cuts Edmund Chen jail term to 1 day in crash case

Former Singapore actor Edmund Chen won a partial appeal Monday after the High Court reduced his jail term from five days to one over a 2025 traffic crash that injured a motorcyclist. Justice Hri Kumar Nair ruled the lower-court sentence was manifestly excessive, though he did not fully reject the finding that custody was warranted. Chen, 64, whose legal name is Tan Kai Yuan, had pleaded guilty to driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, causing grievous hurt. The crash happened on the Ayer Rajah Expressway when Chen braked sharply and filtered across a lane after realizing he was in the wrong lane for the Central Expressway. The 21-year-old rider suffered wrist fractures. Chen began serving the revised sentence immediately.
