Seneca Nation presses Trump to reverse ‘Lake America’ order

Why it matters: The dispute broadens resistance to the rename beyond Canada, bringing treaty and Indigenous-rights claims into the fight.

Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca called on President Donald Trump to rescind an executive order that renamed Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” arguing the move disrespects Indigenous history and treaty commitments. In a Friday message, Seneca said the lake’s traditional Seneca name means “beautiful lake” and said the waterway held cultural and diplomatic importance long before the United States existed. He argued the order violates the spirit of the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty, which he said promised peace and the free use of Seneca lands. Trump signed the order a day earlier amid a trade dispute with Canada, adding a new flashpoint to already tense cross-border relations.
