Senate advances Russia-Iran sanctions bill after Graham funeral

What's new: The measure targets Russia's banks, oligarchs and shadow fleet, and extends Iran energy and weapons sanctions through 2031.

The Senate overwhelmingly cleared a procedural vote Wednesday on a bipartisan sanctions package aimed at Russia and Iran, signaling the measure is likely to pass the chamber and move to the House. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy watched from the floor after meeting senators on Capitol Hill during a Washington visit for the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham, the late Republican lawmaker whose name the bill now bears. The proposal would hit Russian political figures, oligarchs, banks and the shadow fleet used to move oil. It also lets the president impose tariffs on the five largest importers of Russian crude or gas and the top five countries helping Russia evade energy sanctions. Separate Iran sanctions due to expire this year would run through 2031.
