Semeru sends 3-km pyroclastic flow, stays at Level III

The Thursday morning eruption sent ash 700 meters high toward the south-southwest after two earlier blasts.

Mount Semeru on the border of Lumajang and Malang, East Java, erupted again on Thursday morning, sending a pyroclastic flow about 3 kilometers from the summit of Mahameru. According to the Semeru Volcano Observation Post, the eruption at 06:33 WIB produced an ash column about 700 meters above the summit, thick gray in color and drifting to the south and southwest. The activity was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters for about 3 minutes 44 seconds. Earlier, Semeru also erupted at 03:33 WIB and 05:37 WIB. The mountain’s status remains Level III, or Siaga. Residents are barred from activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan for 13 kilometers from the summit, as well as within 500 meters of riverbanks because of the risk of pyroclastic flows and lahars as far as 17 kilometers.
