Schools in wildfire-smoke areas must shift to remote learning at ISPU 201

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education requires schools in areas hit by wildfire smoke to suspend in-person classes and move to remote learning when the Air Pollution Standard Index reaches 201-300. The rule is set out in Circular Letter No. 20 of 2026, issued on Aug. 28. For ISPU 101-200, in-person classes may continue on a limited basis, while remote learning applies to vulnerable groups, including PAUD students, first- through third-grade elementary students, SLB students and children with comorbidities. If ISPU rises above 300, all school gatherings must stop and education units must prioritize evacuation and health protection. The circular also allows BOSP funds to be used to buy masks, air purifiers, fans, vent covers, offline modules and remote-learning support. In Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan, the education office is preparing a remote-learning plan as the smoke haze develops.
