Sally Rooney books pulled from UK sale over Palestine Action support

Why it matters: UK stores can sell existing stock, but new print and digital supply has stopped after royalty payments raised legal risk.

Irish novelist Sally Rooney’s books will no longer be supplied in the United Kingdom after her publisher, Faber, concluded it could not legally pass UK earnings to her because she has pledged proceeds to Palestine Action, a group Britain has banned under terrorism laws. The halt covers print and digital formats, including new UK editions of “Normal People,” “Conversations With Friends” and “Beautiful World, Where Are You.” Booksellers can still sell copies already on their shelves, but cannot order more. Rooney said she was prepared to accept the consequences of publicly backing the group. The dispute has reignited debate in Britain over free speech, publishing and the scope of the 2025 ban on Palestine Action.
