Russian missile attack on Kyiv kills at least 13

Ukraine said it is running short of ballistic interceptors as Kyiv lost power briefly and Poland activated defensive air operations.

Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv and surrounding areas early Thursday killed at least 13 people and wounded 40 others, according to the Ukrainian government. Apartments, warehouses, schools and a children’s hospital were damaged, while fires broke out at several locations and parts of the capital briefly lost power. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said some residents were trapped inside residential buildings. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the casualties came amid a shortage of air defense missiles, especially Patriot interceptors supplied by Western allies. Ukraine’s air force indicated that none of the ballistic missiles were shot down in the attack. In neighboring Poland, the military activated defensive air operations to protect its airspace.
