Russia frees ex-Marine Robert Gilman after 4 years in prison

What's next: Gilman was flown to the US for medical evaluation after advocates warned his condition had become life-threatening.

Russia released former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman on Tuesday after more than four years in custody, sending the 32-year-old American back to the United States for treatment. U.S. officials said President Vladimir Putin approved a humanitarian pardon, and Gilman boarded a State Department plane from Russia to Washington Dulles before an expected transfer to a rehabilitation center in San Antonio, Texas. Gilman had been jailed since 2022 in Voronezh on charges tied to altercations with police and prison staff. Advocates for his family said he had recently fallen into a dissociative stupor, was being fed through a tube and faced dire medical risk, adding urgency to the negotiations.
