Russell Brand's London rape and assault trial opens with jury selection

What's next: Prosecutors are expected to open their case later this week in a trial involving six women and alleged offenses from 1999 to 2009.

Russell Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday as his trial on rape and sexual assault charges got underway. The first day ended after jury selection, and the hearing was adjourned until Tuesday. Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The case involves six women and alleged offenses between 1999 and 2009. Prosecutors have previously alleged he raped a woman in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference and separately assaulted women linked to television, radio and media work. The trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks.
