Rupiah weakens to Rp18.095 per U.S. dollar on Friday

The currency faced pressure from the U.S. midterm election outcome, even as Indonesia's economy grew 5.47 percent in Q3.

The rupiah opened 13 points weaker in Friday morning trading at Rp18.095 per U.S. dollar, from the previous close of Rp18.082 per U.S. dollar. Pressure on the Garuda currency came as markets reacted to the result of the U.S. midterm election won by the Democratic Party. Permata Bank chief economist Josua Pardede said the outcome had briefly lifted global risk appetite, helped by lower oil prices, but investors later refocused on its impact on U.S. financial markets. He said investors also shifted funds from AI-related stocks into safe-haven assets amid concerns over tighter policy toward the industry. At home, BPS reported that Indonesia's economy grew 5.47 percent year on year in the third quarter of 2026, up from 5.29 percent in the previous quarter.
