Rupiah opens 40 points lower at Rp17,795 per US dollar

Higher oil prices at $83.21 a barrel and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz weighed on the rupiah at the open.

The rupiah weakened 40 points, or 0.23 percent, at the opening of trading Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, to Rp17,795 per US dollar from the previous close of Rp17,755 per US dollar. Doo Financial Futures currency analyst Lukman Leong said pressure came from geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, which pushed up global crude prices again. He said oil was now around $83.21 a barrel, up from about $77 at last week's close. The sentiment was tied to a deadlock in shipping talks in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran was also said to still be in talks with Oman on shipping routes and maritime safety mechanisms. On the other hand, investors are awaiting retail sales data, with the rupiah expected to move in the Rp17,750-Rp17,850 range per US dollar.
