Rights report details beatings at ICE’s 5,000-bed Texas detention camp

What’s new: 64 of 71 detainees interviewed said they were assaulted by staff or saw others beaten at Camp East Montana.

Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union released a report Wednesday alleging routine beatings, medical neglect and blocked access to lawyers and relatives at Camp East Montana, an ICE detention center at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. The groups said 64 of 71 detainees interviewed over five months reported being assaulted by staff or witnessing abuse. Detainees also described filthy living conditions, inedible food and missed medical treatment. The facility, built to hold up to 5,000 people, has faced repeated scrutiny since opening in August. At least three detainees have died there, including a 55-year-old Cuban migrant whose death was ruled a homicide by a local medical examiner. DHS called reports of inhumane conditions false.
