Republicans release Biden tapes on classified records probe

What's new: The recordings capture Biden in 2016 and 2017 discussing material later examined by special counsel Robert Hur.

Congressional Republicans released audio recordings of Joe Biden’s interviews with memoir ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, including exchanges in which Biden referred to classified material after leaving office as vice president. The tapes were gathered during special counsel Robert Hur’s 2024 investigation into Biden’s handling of records from his Senate and Obama-era service. Hur found Biden had improperly retained records but did not recommend charges, concluding prosecutors could not prove willful misconduct beyond a reasonable doubt. Biden had fought to keep the recordings private, but his lawyers dropped their lawsuit after court losses. Republicans said redactions in the released audio obscure some references to classified information.
