Qinghai quake kills 1, injures 4 after 6.3 tremor hits Haixi

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Qinghai province in northwestern China on Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring four others, according to state media citing emergency authorities. The quake hit a high-altitude area in Haixi prefecture at 5:06 p.m. Beijing time at a depth of 10 kilometers, the China Earthquake Networks Center said. Authorities evacuated workers from coal mines near the epicenter while rescue teams searched for people who may have been trapped and assessed property damage. China’s earthquake administration activated an emergency response after the main tremor, which was followed by several aftershocks, including one measured at magnitude 4.9.
