Preservation group asks Supreme Court to halt White House ballroom

What's next: Chief Justice John Roberts is weighing dueling emergency requests before an appeals-court pause could take effect Friday.

A historic preservation group asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to stop construction of President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom while litigation continues. The National Trust for Historic Preservation filed its request days after the administration asked the justices to let work proceed during the appeals process. The dispute centers on a $400 million, 90,000-square-foot project that has already involved demolition of the East Wing. A divided federal appeals panel upheld a lower-court order pausing aboveground work, though that ruling was temporarily suspended to allow a Supreme Court appeal. The administration argues the president has broad authority to renovate the White House and says underground military work must continue for security.
