Prabowo threatens to revoke permits of land-burning firms
He said some violators were foreign companies, and one concession holder had been found in breach as many as 19 times.
President Prabowo Subianto ordered a probe into karhutla and possible corporate involvement, while threatening to revoke the permits of companies proven to have burned land. At a Cabinet plenary session at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta on Wednesday, he called land burning “environmental terrorism” because it endangers the health of millions. Prabowo said findings in the field pointed to human involvement, then asked the Police, the Attorney General’s Office, Kementerian Kehutanan, TNI, and BIN to investigate further. A day later at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of TPAKD at JiExpo Kemayoran, he added that there were signs many foreign companies were also responsible; some concession holders, he said, had violated the rules repeatedly, in one case up to 19 times.
