Prabowo signs Police law, active officers can hold civil posts

New provisions raise retirement ages to 59 for enlisted ranks and 60 for officers, while the police chief may get a one-year extension.

President Prabowo Subianto enacted Law No. 5 of 2026 on the National Police on 17 June 2026 in Jakarta. The law is the third amendment to Law No. 2 of 2002 and includes several major changes, including opening the way for active Polri members to take positions in ministries or agencies outside the police institution as long as the work relates to policing functions. Under Article 28A, such postings can also be made at the request of a ministry or agency that needs the specific expertise of Polri members, or through a presidential assignment. The revision also changes retirement ages: bintara and tamtama to 59 years, first- and higher-ranking officers to 60 years, while the police chief may be extended for up to one year based on needs set out in a presidential decree. The DPR approved the revision first on 9 June 2026.
